5 Things You Need to Know in Order to Run a Full Marathon

Running a marathon is an extremely challenging task. It requires a lot of guts, preparation and a sense of adventure to accomplish.  You also need to be well motivated and determined to succeed in order to reach the finish line. The interesting thing with running a marathon is that you do not even need to win it in order to succeed; completing the marathon is a noteworthy accomplishment in itself. There are a number of things that you might need to learn how to do before you are in a good position to take on the challenge of a marathon. One of the most important things that you will need to consider is that running a full marathon is considerably more difficult than running a half marathon or some of the other shorter races, so it will take time and preparation before you will be able to take on the challenge of the marathon and run it as comfortably as you can.

1.     Be patient

Patience is a virtue that a lot of people do not seem to have today. Patience is very important to have when preparing for a marathon because you cannot just wake up one day and decide to run a marathon and expect to complete it or even to win it. You have to train and train hard. You have to give it everything you have to make sure that you are in a position to complete the race. An essential thing to remember when you are competing in a marathon is that you cannot rush it. It is a long race and you have to pace yourself. Even when you are training, make sure that you give yourself enough time to be able to complete all of your training regimes. If you are just starting out or if you are training for your first full marathon, you will seriously need to make sure that you are as patient with yourself and with the training schedule as possible.

2.     Start long and slower

When you are training for the full marathon, it’s not a good idea to just go full out for the challenge at the beginning. You have to start slowly as you build your skills and technique for the longer race. What this means is that you will need to avoid long, slow runs because these will not get you the results that you want. A full marathon is the kind of race that requires a lot of careful planning, thought, preparation and training. You can train with the slow runs, but remember to not get overwhelmed with the idea of competition. Your goal is to complete the marathon run and not to worry about what the other individual next to you is doing. A lot of people have their minds set on completing the marathon within a given time frame, but this is not the case for everyone. It’s important for you to make sure that you keep your own targets in mind and not worry about what someone else is thinking or doing. You are running this race for yourself and not for someone else.

3.     Increasing your pace as you go

When you are training for the full marathon, you will need to really watch your pace. Being able to control your pace will take you quite far in being able to complete the race. Pace is something that you should track in your training journal in order to make sure that you are running appropriately. As you keep training, take note of your long runs and increase them from time to time. This is why you should be timing yourself as you train. Every other day that you come to train, always make sure that you go over and above what you did the last time you were training and try to establish a comfortable pace and running time.

4.     Train to run faster

Of course you cannot run the whole marathon like a sprint, but you will still need to make sure that you are able to run it as fast as you can. Running a marathon takes a lot of time, guts and experience so you should not go into it without the proper preparation. Without the appropriate training, you can expect to fail. However, with careful planning, you should know at what stage of the marathon you will need to run faster and at which stages you will need to run at a normal pace. It is all about understanding the terrain, the weather conditions and so forth. There are a lot of factors that will determine whether or not you can run the marathon the way you want and, most importantly, how to make sure that you run it to the best of your ability. In the course of your training, you should practice running various speeds when different weather conditions are present. When the time comes for you to run the marathon, you should then be able to put this into practice in order to run the race of your life, just the way you want it.

5.     Overnight success

As sure as Mars is far away from the earth, you cannot come to your first marathon and hope to become an overnight celebrity. That’s the kind of thing that typically only happens in movies. As a matter of fact, you cannot run a race without the proper training and preparation and hope to win it or to become a success story overnight. It takes a lot of hard work, time and determination to be able to manage the challenge. Without that, your dream of running a marathon will remain just a dream.
